  1. List 5 ways that seals are adapted to survive well in water.
  Because they are sea creatures
  Because they are marine mammals
  They store oxygen so they rely on it while underwater
  Because they have a layer of fat or blubber that keeps them warm under cold water.
  Because the prefer cold water
  
  
  2. List the 3 most common New Zealand seals and write down 5 facts about each of them.
  Kekeno (New Zealand fur seal) 
  • The last population of seals were 200,000 in 2001
  • They are found in rocky shores of New Zealand mainland chatham islands.
  • Adult females: maximum length 1.5 m, weight 30-50 kg.
  • Adult males: maximum length 2.5 m, weight 90-150 kg.
  • They eat on squid and small mid fish.
  
  
  Whakahao (Sea lion)
  • The population is about 12,000, smaller than the population of kekeno.
  • The adult male weight is 190 bigger than the kekeno!!
  • The adult male height is 2. Metres long.
  • length 180–200 cm
  • weight 85–160 kg
  elephant seals 
  • The male elephant seals can reach upto 20 feet and taller
  • The male seal is upto 8,800
  • They also eat squid
  • The females average height is 10 feet
  • The females are upto 4,500 pounds!

  • Seals normally have one pup a year.
  • Baby seals stay on ice land until their ice fur grows
  • Seals normally have pups around january and february
  • Baby seals can not swim until their fur is waterproof
  • Baby seals stay with their mums upto 4 weeks or 6
  
  
  4. List 3 dangers to seals and say why each of these are dangerous for seals.
  • Swimming for baby seals are very dangerous because their furs are not waterproof
  • Humans are very dangerous to seals because who knows what they could do to them
  • Seals in hot weather is no good because because they are used to cold temperature
